Baking Soda Beauty

For my first ever post on this blog I have decided to talk about one of beauty’s best kept secrets.....baking soda!

Baking soda or sodium bicarbonate is predominately used in baking however there are many other uses for this inexpensive powder. Baking soda has been used for years as a household cleaner, shampoo, deodorant or even washing powder.

My number one use for this powder is exfoliation. It may sound bizarre scrubbing your skin with baking soda, but it is the best exfoliator I have ever used! For around $1.70 (NZ$) for 500g it definitely wins out in the price department.

I usually use baking soda once a week or a little more often if I am going to use fake tan afterwards. I start by taking a small bowl of baking soda and a lemon cut in two in the shower. After covering the areas I want to exfoliate in baking soda I squeeze the lemon juice over top – which reacts with the baking soda and creates a fizzing action. The baking soda and lemon reaction (along with a good scrub) removes any existing tan and dead skin. The result is beautifully soft smooth skin, a perfect base for self tan or moisturizer.

I also repeat this lemon/baking soda combo once a week on my face. It gives your skin a clean glow – similar to a microdermabrasion, minus the price tag and leaves the skin incredibly smooth.
